Administrative Procedures

  1. Each regional association is asked to nominate one person each September for the State Distinguished Teacher Award. This name should be submitted to Don Herrington, Assistant Coordinator of Awards, by Nov. 1.
  2. The nominee must be a past recipient of the Regional Outstanding Teacher Award at least one year prior to this nomination. A photocopy of the Regional Outstanding Teacher Award must be included in the portfolio.

    Since the person selected as the Distinguished Teacher will be honored at the International Technology Association Conference each year, it is necessary that the nominee meet the criteria set forth by the ITEA. The recipient of the award will be sent to the ITEA Conference, with transportation expenses paid by ATTE.

    The person nominated not only should be an outstanding teacher, but should also be a strong advocate and leading active participant of the Association.

    In order to give the State Committee a better basis for making judgments, the following documents are requested for each name submitted:

              a. a biographical sketch of person being nominated;

    b.  one folder or notebook (3" ring holding 8V" x 11" paper) of supporting material that would endorse the nominee. The material might include letters from principals, superintendents, fellow faculty members, people from other schools who have worked with that person, or people in industry or the community verifying his/her outstanding ability. All documents must be submitted in a sturdy box suitable for mailing.
  3. A written news release should be prepared by the person who makes the nomination. The news release is to be sent to the respective media by this person in the event the nominee is chosen. (A sample new release is attached for guidance on page F-4.)
  4. A black and white glossy photograph should accompany each news release. The quality of this photograph should be good enough for publication purposes.
Criteria
  1. The teacher who will receive the award should be selected on the basis of his/her demonstrated ability in the Classroom teaching of technology education. In addition, the following suggestions are given for consideration
  2.  
    a.   rapport with students
    b.  ability to motivate stduent interest in technology education and student club work
    c.  success in upgrading technology education in the total school
    d.  ability to capitalize on available funds, space and equipment to provide a maximum            technology education environment for students
    e.  a well-grounded philosophy in technology education
  3. The recipient must be a technology education classroom teacher below the college level.
  4. The recipient should be an active participant in pertinent professional educational associations on the local, state and national levels.
  5. The recipient must be a member of his/her regional association, ATTE and ITEA at the time of his/her nomination.
  6. The teacher must be nominated by a regional association.
ATTE Distinguished Teacher Award Procedures
  1. ATTE Assistant Awards Coordinator will coordinate with the ATYE regionaassociations to ensure that all the DTA forms and documentation are completed, correct, and turned in on time.
  2. The forms, documentation requirements, supporting materials and portfolio for ATTE's DTA Award are the same as that used by ITEA in determining the Teacher Excellence Award. These forms, procedures and timelines can be found in the current ATTE Handbook. The ITEA Affiliate Representative will review the TEA section of the ITEA's Affiliate Representative Handbook each year to ensure that all forms, documentation requirements, supporting materials are current in the DTA section of the ATTE Handbook.
  3. All nominations, necessary completed forms and documentation must be submitted to the ATTE Assistant Awards Coordinator by November 1.
  4. The DTA committee will consist of the past 3 year DTA recipients. The chairperson of the committee will be the member who is m the third year of committee service. In the event of multiple recipients, the one with the most teaching experience will be the chair.
  5. ATTE Assistant Awards Coordinator, on November 2, will send the nominations and all accompanying documentation to the chairperson of the DTA selection committee. The DTA selection committee will review all materials and set a schedule whereby all committee members will review the materials.
  6. Each member of the DTA selection committee will evaluate all the documentation materials of each teacher nominated for the DTA.
  7. A vote by the DTA selection committee for the DTA recipient(s) will be taken by mail, conference call, or group meeting during or before the last week of November.
  8. DTA selection committee chairperson will contact the ATTE Assistant Awards Coordinator with the committee results no later than November 30.
  9. The ATTE Assistant Awards Coordinator will see that all necessary ITEA forms, documentation, support materials, 35mm color slides, and other requirements (listed in the ITEA award information contained in the ATTE Handbook) will be sent to the Teacher Excellence Awards Coordinator and postmarked no later than December 1.
  10. ATTE Assistant Awards Coordinator will contact the AT'FE Past President (ATTE Awards Coordinator) with the DTA results in a timely manner.
  11. ATTE Past President (ATTE Awards Coordinator) will notify, the DTA recipient(s), in a timely manner, of ATTE award selection. The DTA recipient(s) will be informed that his/her name has been forwarded to ITEA for the TEA. The receiving of the TEA is contingent on meeting all of ITEA's TEA requirements. ITEA will notify the TEA winner. Notification to DTA recipient(s) should be done during the first week of December so plans can be made to attend the ATTE and ITEA conferences. The DTA recipient(s) will be responsible to complete registration for the conferences and to make their hotel and transportation arrangements. ATYE will reimburse only for transportation expenses.
  12. ATTE Past President (ATYE Awards Coordinator) will mail congratulatory, notification to the DTA recipient(s) and their school officials (Superintendent, Program Director and Principal) by January 10.
  13. The ITEA Affiliate Representative will mail congratulatory notification to the TEA recipient(s) and their school officials (Superintendent, Program Director and Principal) by March 1.
  14. ATTE region officials (whoever nominated the DTA winner) will send out press releases to the recipient's local media.
